New articulated buoy to improve navigation in Port of Mahón (Menorca)
06-11-2015
Almarin has supplied and installed an articulated buoy in the channel of the port of Mahón, in Menorca (Balearic Islands), specifically near the Island of Lazareto. The Balearic Port Authority, as explained in the tender specifications, detected "areas with little draft that in adverse weather conditions can generate dangerous situations for ships as they are close to the margin delimited by the buoys". As a solution to improve safety in navigation, the previous buoy has been replaced by an articulated one, thus obtaining a lower borneo radius.
The articulated buoys are designed with a single tube that, through an articulation, is connected to the dead; the tube remains vertical thanks to a submerged float that generates a permanent impulse towards the surface. The result is similar to that of a fixed beacon since the tube hardly moves, thus delimiting with great precision the coordinate in question. The new buoy, model Alba 3, is made with a galvanized steel structure and a polyethylene float. It has a 5.5m focal plane and is painted green with a central red stripe, according to IALA recommendations, thus marking the division of the channel. In addition, it is designed with steps for easy access to the flashlight and has a radar reflector and a stop mark.
